Rhonda Calhoun – Texas

I love hunting because I love the outdoors. To me, being able to be in the wilderness is a privilege. Unfortunately some people will never witness this experience. I was almost one of those people. I was born and raised in the city and did not come from a hunting family. Guns….yes but just for recreational shooting.
Until I met my husband who was born and raised in Texas I never understood the importance of conservation and how important it is to preserve our outdoor heritage.
I started late at age 42 but better late than never! In the middle of 1998 I harvested my first animal. At that time I was beside myself because I never thought I could ever “kill” an animal. I still didn’t understand that it was not just “killing”. It took a while but I finally realized what it was all about. Now when people ask me WHY I hunt I explain that I am not only providing food for my family as well as others by donating the harvest but am another person that is keeping our precious wildlife alive. I consider myself a hardcore huntress because I’m not afraid of experiencing life in the outdoors.
List of accomplishments of merit, special awards and organizations involved with:
Competitive Archer and Level II Archery Instructor, Member Mule Deer Foundation, Prior Member DSC , Pope and Young Club.
Fourth woman ever to harvest a Cape Buffalo with a bow. Mostly shoot Bow but have harvested Mule Deer and Whitetail deer with rifle plus Antelope with Muzzle Loader.
I am a positive role model to our youth and women who have never been exposed to archery or the outdoors and look forward to teaching them. Have filmed my own hunts and have had success with episodes on a few Hunting TV Shows. To me every hunt is a success whether I harvest anything or not. Just having the pleasure of being outdoors sharing nature with the animals. Featured in several magazines including Mathews Inc., local newspaper, Mills County Hunting outdoors 2013 and 2015, Wakeeney Kansas local paper, WON (Womens outdoor News).
